Volunteers did a decent job during the OTHL Delhi Cup 2011

Volunteers light up our Delhi Cup

21/12/2011

Hockey Citizen group, founded by K. Arumugam, is a volunteer based, vibrant, not-for-profit-organization. The very idea of working at grassroot level was founded on the spirit of volunteerism.

The concept is simple.

One need not devote whole life to promote hockey. Your life and hockey can easily go hand in hand.

You need not even be a hardened hockey fan; only requirement is just love the sport, and then when time permits come and join this Hockey Citizen Group to be part of hockey at some level.

This Non Governmental Organization offers scope for any body who has some time with them to spare for hockey.

We at this NGO are happy we could make progress in spotting, providing avenues to, and in the benefit of useful volunteers.

The people in charge of our activities in each centre - be it Kanpur, Kolkata or Pondicherry -- are volunteers, each looking after at least 8-10 schools, right from spotting and getting hockey introduced there.

Founder of this NGO diretly handles two other cities -- Chennai and Delhi -- where Hockey Citizen Group's novel One Thousand Hockey Legs Project is in operation.

They spend half a day on Sundays to join any of our centres to be among the kids whom we bring to hockey turfs.

Some of them are good players themselves, and it helps in a big way. They play with the kids, impart training and significantly fills up the gap whenever paid coaches fail to turn up.

Navneet Tyagi and Himanshu Diman belong to this variety. Navneet, a swimmer, had a liking for hockey and captained IIT-Guwhati hockey team, where he did his Engineering.

Himanshu, incidentally too captain of his college team, which is IIT-Bombay. Till last year before he joined a job in Delhi, was leading Bombay IIT hockey team in the inter-IIT competitions. He, like Naveneet, follow www.stick2hockey.com and this is how both are in the OTHL now.

Last week during the OTHL Delhi Cup, Himanshu turned up despite the event being held on working days. He also got a chance to play with children, as the rules permit one coach to play in restricted field areas.

Thankfully, Himanshu brought his friend Shubam, who also took leave to be with the children, and enjoyed shooting still and movie cameras. We hope Shubam has made a beginning and will see him involved more and more in the coming days.

Navneet was regular on his holidays on any of our centres till he was transferred to Lucknow. He has just missed the Delhi event.

Rakhee Sharma is a recent entrant to the world of OTHL. She works in a television channel, and took leave to be part of the Delhi OTHL Cup. She handled catering, certificates, ceremonies and general co-ordination, besides indulging in her interests -- camera shoots.

Pankaj Chauhan, a video-analyst with another television channel also turned up, extended a helping hand on the third day, and is expected to offer whatever he can in the coming days.

We thank all of them for the successful conduct of One Thousand Hockey Legs Delhi Cup 2011.

And we don't forget coaches and staff of Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium who went beyond their call of duty to make us homely and also to carry out the task in a smooth way.

Anybody who is interested in hockey, interested in our kids, interested to contribute to the sport we love and also the society we live in, can be part of OTHL World.

Just spare half a day in a week, I assure you a new world of experience to you, which you will not forget forever.

Join us, we can make a difference.
