2nd day of OTHL Kolkata Festival

1st Match:

The first match on the second day of the OTHL hockey festival 2011 was played between the two Julien Day Schools - Ganganagar and Kalyani. JDS Ganganagar dominated the proceedings. JDS Kalyani made counterattacks but it was the solid defending of Neelesh Rai and Osman Siddiqui of JDS Ganganagar, which made all the difference. The OTHL Kolkata Hockey Festival 2011 began with much fanfare on Friday, the 11th February at the Ganganagar Julien Day School campus.

All the schools subscribed to OTHL in Kolkata converged here for the much anticipated Festival of Hockey, where matches and quiz events kept the hockey boys and girls enthralled throughout the day. There was energy and enthusiasm abound amidst the kids, which is seen to be enjoyed.

FOURTH MATCH: Kanaipur Sriguru boys. JDS Ganganagar upset all calculations when they went into the lead in the 4th minute through Lovepreet Singh. Barely had the shock settled when Lovepreet slammed in the second goal in the very next minute. He completed his hat trick in the 7th minute through a third field goal. We always pondered over one main issue in schools hockey. That pertains to basics -- how to select 20 or 25-member team when almost triple number of boys or girls turn up.

Almost everyone of them is new to hockey, and therefore game's skill is ruled out as the selection criteria.

Muslim High School, located in the busy Tiruvallikeni area of Chennai, has taken up hockey seriously.

Recently, they completed all formalities to join One Thousand Hockey Legs.

Muslim School, a prominent talent pool for tennis and other Olympic sports in the metropolis, did not have a hockey team right now.

Welcome 2011

The new year marks beginning of third year of ‘One Thousand Hockey Legs’.

It has so far been so interesting and inspiring that we look forward to 2011 as a year of consolidation.

We could convince and start hockey in about 30 schools spread over five cities – Puducherry, Kanpur, Kolkata, Chennai, Delhi -- where hockey was not in the list of sports being practised before we knocked their doors.
